As the engine gets older, a number of problems can occur more often. Knowing what is wrong with the engine and managing these small issues on your own won’t only increase the performance of these engines, but can also bring down operational costs significantly.

 

Here are some turbine engine maintenance tips to follow.

Keep the Fastener Tightened

The performance of fasteners in the long-run depends on how well they are torqued. For a fastener to perform well, it needs to be tightened accurately and regularly. If you don’t tighten up your hardware, it will impact the preload capability of your turbine engine. Also, if the fasteners aren’t torqued properly, the nuts, bolts and assembly parts of your engines will wear off fast. Excessively tightened fastener, on the other hand, will put unnecessary stress on the nuts and bolts, again causing them to wear and tear fast.

Applying Proper Torquing

Not following proper torquing guidelines and using inappropriate tools for applying torque can be another major reason behind the low performance of your turbine engine. When an assembly in the engine is manufactured, the amount of stress it will bear is determined along with the possibility of other factors like corrosion, fatigue and temperature damages. Keeping all these things in mind, torquing tools are established carefully. However, a lot of people don’t bother checking which torque wench is appropriate and instead use the typical “elbow torque” to set things right. Be careful not to fall into this trap and visit the tool room to find out which wench to use before you start torquing the fasteners.

Install O-Rings Properly

Another factor that often gets ignored during turbine engine maintenance is the proper installation of O-Rings. To ensure that the errors related to O-Ring installations are kept at minimal, a standard procedure should be followed. Before you start installing the O-rings, make sure to check them for manufacturing defects such as cuts, cracks, pitting or deformation. Proper lubrication should also be done prior to installation in order to avoid damage or clogging. Finally, make sure to not twist the O-rings while installing them.
