When operators and fleet managers are evaluating turboprop engine options — whether for initial acquisition, fleet standardization, or replacement sourcing — the PT6A-34 and PT6A-135A appear on short lists with regularity. Both are proven workhorses in the Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A family, but they serve distinctly different missions, platforms, and operational environments.
At JetSet Airmotive, we’ve been supporting the full PT6A series since 1981 — so when operators call us asking which engine makes more sense for their situation, we know the numbers cold.
PT6A-34: The Agricultural and Utility Workhorse
The PT6A-34 is a direct-drive turboprop delivering approximately 750 shaft horsepower (SHP) and is most commonly found on:
- Air Tractor AT-402B and other agricultural aircraft
- Pilatus PC-6 Turbo Porter
- Shorts Skyvan and cargo configurations
Key PT6A-34 specifications:
- Rated power: ~750 SHP
- Time Between Overhaul (TBO): 3,600 hours (per P&WC service bulletin guidance)
- Weight: ~330 lbs dry
- Configuration: Free-turbine, reverse flow
PT6A-34 Overhaul Considerations: The -34 sees heavy usage in agricultural operations — meaning engines often accumulate hours aggressively, with exposure to particulate ingestion and chemical residue. Borescope inspections at every hot section interval are essential, and operators should plan for compressor wash schedules of no less than every 25 hours in ag operations.
JetSet Airmotive maintains a strong inventory of PT6A-34 parts and works with FAA-certified overhaul vendors to service these engines through the full cycle — from hot section inspections (HSI) to major overhaul.
PT6A-135A: The King Air Flagship Engine
The PT6A-135A is a higher-performance variant delivering approximately 750 SHP with refinements in fuel burn and reliability optimized for the Beechcraft King Air C90 and related variants. (Note: the -135A is not the same as the -135 — the “A” series features improved turbine cooling and sealing updates that extend hot section life.)
Key PT6A-135A specifications:
- Rated power: ~750 SHP (flat-rated)
- TBO: 3,500 hours
- Common platforms: King Air C90, C90A, C90B
- Weight: ~336 lbs dry
PT6A-135A Overhaul Considerations: King Air operators running charter, cargo, or medevac profiles accumulate hours with high cycle counts relative to total time — meaning low-time engines can still present hot section wear from frequent power settings and thermal cycling. Operators approaching or beyond HSI limits should prioritize borescope evaluation before assuming remaining time equates to serviceable condition.
Pratt & Whitney Canada’s service documentation provides overhaul manual guidance, but real-world condition monitoring from an experienced operator like JetSet is where the practical knowledge lives.
